What to know
Yunoko Onsen (湯の児温泉) is a hot spring resort located along the scenic coastline just north of central Minamata, still within the city limits.
Many of the resort's ryokan feature rooms and baths with panoramic ocean views. Some also welcome day visitors to use their baths for a fee, typically between 300 and 800 yen.
Just offshore, connected by a bridge, lies Yunoko Island—a small islet with walking trails and a tiny shrine at its summit. A stroll around the island after dark during high tide can feel like an Indiana Jones adventure, with crashing waves and chirping insects.
Yunoko Onsen is about a 20–25 minute bus or car ride from Minamata Station. The one-way bus fare is 150 yen, but buses run only every 2 to 4 hours.
