Yamanouchi

Travel guide for Yamanouchi, a district in northeastern Nagano prefecture with a popular monkey park, hot springs, and skiing resorts.

What to know

Yamanouchi (山ノ内) is a town in northern Nagano Prefecture packed with attractions. The famous Jigokudani Monkey Park draws crowds eager to see wild monkeys soaking in natural hot springs. But the monkeys aren't the only ones enjoying the waters—nearby Shibu Onsen and Yudanaka Onsen are traditional hot spring towns centered on bathing.

Japan's largest ski resort, Shiga Kogen, also lies within Yamanouchi. A single lift ticket grants access to dozens of runs, some of which hosted events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Shiga Kogen and other parts of Yamanouchi are part of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, offering hiking and outdoor activities when the snow melts.
