Meganebashi Bridge

Visitor guide for Meganebashi Bridge, a historic stone bridge in central Nagasaki.

What to know

Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge) is the most famous of several stone bridges crossing the Nakashima River in downtown Nagasaki. Its name comes from the way its reflection in the water creates the shape of a pair of glasses. This popular landmark is designated as an Important Cultural Property.

Built in 1634 under the supervision of a Chinese monk who later became the head priest of nearby Kofukuji Temple, the bridge was heavily damaged by floods in 1982 but was restored using original stones.

A stone walkway along the riverbank offers a peaceful stroll with lovely views of the water and bridges. Accessible by steps from street level at various points, the path has a calm atmosphere.

Meganebashi Bridge is a short walk from the Meganebashi tram stop on lines 4 and 5.
