What to know
Oura Church (大浦天主堂, Ōura Tenshudō) is a Catholic church in Nagasaki. Built in 1864 by a French missionary for the city's growing foreign merchant community, it is Japan's oldest surviving Christian church.
The church honors the 26 Christians executed in Nagasaki in 1597. Today, this working church showcases beautiful European architecture and attracts many visitors. It was the first Western-style building in Japan designated as a National Treasure. The admission fee includes access to a museum on the history of Christianity in Japan.
The Christian Museum, housed in historic buildings to the right of the church, displays artifacts and documents about Oura Church and Christianity in Japan. Most explanations are in Japanese.
Oura Church is a five-minute walk from Ouratenshudo tram station on line 5, right next to the entrance of Glover Garden.
