Korankei

Visitor guide for Korankei, a valley in Aichi Prefecture reputed to be one of the best spots for autumn colors in the Tokai Region.

What to know

Korankei (香嵐渓) is a valley near Nagoya, widely regarded as one of the best spots for autumn colors in the Chubu Region.

The valley is shaped by Mount Iimori (254 meters), where Kojakuji Temple is located. In the 17th century, the head priest of Kojakuji planted maple trees along the temple approach, inspiring locals to do the same. Today, visitors can enjoy the spectacular autumn scenery that resulted from these efforts. The peak season typically occurs from mid to late November.

The best colors are found along the paths beside the Tomoe River on the western and southern sides of Mount Iimori. You'll see beautiful maple tunnels and vibrant foliage combined with river views and charming bridges. The vermillion Taigetsukyo Bridge is the symbol of Korankei and a fantastic photo spot.

During the autumn leaf season (throughout November), festival stalls are set up near Tomoehashi Bridge, and nightly illuminations run from sunset until 21:00. Events like musical performances take place at the Korankei Hiroba open space.

A year-round attraction is the Sanshu Asuke Yashiki Village, which preserves old houses in a village-like setting. Visitors can join workshops to make handicrafts such as straw sandals and indigo-dyed handkerchiefs.

Getting to Korankei takes time and requires transfers due to limited direct public transport. From Nagoya Station, you'll need at least one train and bus transfer. The one-way journey costs about 1500-2000 yen and takes just under two hours with good connections. Several routes are available, as shown on the network map below.
