Ando Museum

Visitor guide for the Ando Museum on Naoshima.

What to know

The Ando Museum opened in time for the 2013 Setouchi Triennale in Naoshima's Honmura district, joining the Art House Project as another draw for contemporary art enthusiasts. Designed by its namesake, Tadao Ando—one of Japan's most celebrated architects, who also designed most other museums on the island—the museum blends seamlessly into the neighborhood from the outside, appearing as a typical traditional residence.

Inside, however, the building combines traditional interior design with Ando's signature use of concrete, creating a uniquely intriguing atmosphere. Photographs and explanatory signs along the walls document Ando's projects on Naoshima and beyond.

From Miyanoura Ferry Terminal, take a bus toward Tsutsujiso (1-3 per hour) to the Nokyo-mae stop in Honmura (5 minutes, 100 yen), then walk two minutes to the museum. Alternatively, it's a 2.5 km bike ride (10 minutes) or a 35-45 minute walk. Honmura also has its own port with infrequent ferries to Uno Port.
