What to know
Naoshima (直島) is an island in the Seto Inland Sea famous for its contemporary art and as a key venue for the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Part of Kagawa Prefecture, the island offers a Mediterranean vibe with sandy beaches, sunny weather, and a relaxed rural atmosphere, making it a peaceful escape from Japan's bustling cities.
Most of Naoshima's art is curated by the Benesse Corporation, which operates museums and installations on Naoshima and the neighboring islands of Teshima and Inujima. Many of Benesse's museums, including the Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, Naoshima New Museum of Art, and Benesse House, were designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando.
Additionally, Naoshima's municipal buildings and schools were designed by modern architect Kazuhiro Ishii.
