Lee Ufan Museum

Visitor guide for the Lee Ufan Museum on Naoshima.

What to know

Opened in time for the 2010 Setouchi Triennale, the Lee Ufan Museum (李禹煥美術館, Ri Ūfan Bijutsukan) showcases works by the Korean contemporary artist Lee Ufan. Born in Korea, he has lived and taught in Japan for many years. The museum displays large installations made of stone, concrete, and massive iron slabs, along with paintings from his earlier career.

The museum building was designed by Tadao Ando, who also created the other museums on the island, including the nearby Benesse House and Chichu Art Museum. Like his other works on Naoshima, the Lee Ufan Museum blends geometrically shaped reinforced concrete with nature and open spaces that highlight the artwork inside.

There are 1-3 buses per hour from Miyanoura Ferry Terminal via Honmura to the Tsutsujiso bus stop at the east gate of Benesse House (10 minutes, 100 yen). From there, you can walk (20 minutes) or take a free shuttle bus (5 minutes) to the Lee Ufan Museum. Alternatively, the museum is about a 2.5-kilometer bicycle ride (15 minutes) or walk (40-50 minutes) from the ferry terminal.

The Lee Ufan Museum sits between Benesse House and Chichu Art Museum. It is a five-minute walk or a two-minute free shuttle ride from either museum.
