What to know
Yoshikien (吉城園) is a charming Japanese garden in central Nara. It takes its name from the Yoshikigawa River, a small stream that flows beside the garden, and occupies the site of former priest residences of Kofukuji Temple.
The garden features three distinct areas: a pond garden, a moss garden, and a tea ceremony garden. This makes Yoshikien a great place to experience three different styles of Japanese garden design in one visit. If you'd like to see even more gardening techniques, Isuien Garden is just across the river.
Because it's centrally located, Yoshikien Garden is easy to combine with other Nara highlights like Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple, both about a ten-minute walk away.
Yoshikien Garden is a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. From JR Nara Station, take a frequent bus bound for Aoyamajutaku or Kunimidai-hacchome to Oshiagecho bus stop (10 minutes, 250 yen).
