What to know
Mount Norikuradake (乗鞍岳) is one of Japan's 100 famous mountains and the southernmost peak of the Northern Japan Alps. Situated near Kamikochi on the border of Gifu and Nagano prefectures, the mountain and the Norikura Kogen highlands at its base offer abundant scenic spots with mountain views, dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and inviting hiking trails.
Thanks to its high elevation, Mount Norikuradake is among the first places in Japan to experience autumn colors. Alpine plants typically begin changing color from mid to late September at higher altitudes, with the season continuing into October as the colors descend the mountain slopes. The area also features several hot springs, notably at nearby Shirahone Onsen.
