Travel guide for the Norikura Kogen in the Northern Japan Alps.

What to know

Norikura Kogen (乗鞍高原) is a highland resort town at the foot of Mount Norikuradake in the Northern Japan Alps. This scenic natural area offers hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, and a small ski resort.

The Norikura Kogen Tourist Information Center serves as the area's transport hub, with buses to Matsumoto and the summit of Mount Norikuradake. It features a large free parking lot, a tourist information office, and a nature center with exhibits on local wildlife and ecology.

A network of hiking trails connects the highland's waterfalls and natural sights. The highlight is Sanbondaki, three beautiful waterfalls flowing side by side into one stream. It's a pleasant 25-minute hike from the Sanbondaki bus stop. Other easy walks include trails to Ushidome Pond and the Bandokoro and Zengoro Waterfalls, each reachable in 10–15 minutes from their trailheads.
