What to know
Takahashi (高梁), also called Bitchu-Takahashi after the historic region to avoid confusion with other towns of the same name, is a small city nestled in the mountainous interior of Okayama Prefecture. Its main draw is Matsuyama Castle, perched high on a mountain peak—the only original mountaintop castle in Japan and one of the country's oldest surviving castles.
At the foot of the mountain, Takahashi's well-preserved old town features samurai residences and merchant houses from the feudal era. Scattered around are several museums and temples, notably Raikyuji Temple, whose Zen garden was designed by the local lord and renowned garden master Kobori Enshu.
