What to know
Onomichi (尾道) is a charming town on the Seto Inland Sea in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. It stretches from the mainland onto nearby islands connected by the Shimanami Kaido bridges. Small ferries run between downtown and the islands, adding to the nostalgic port atmosphere.
The town is known for its many slopes, with attractions scattered along narrow lanes winding through residential areas. The famous Temple Walk takes visitors up and down these slopes, passing 25 temples along the way.
Despite its small size, Onomichi has a rich literary and cinematic heritage. Several respected authors and directors were born here, and the town has served as a filming location for many movies and TV dramas. Several museums along or near the Temple Walk celebrate this history.
One of Onomichi's most unique attractions is the Shimanami Kaido, the only land route between Honshu and Shikoku accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. Along the route, highlights include the Hirayama Museum and the distinctive Kosanji Temple.
