Kurashiki

Travel guide for the city of Kurashiki in Japan.

What to know

Kurashiki (倉敷) lies in Okayama Prefecture, a short distance from the prefectural capital of Okayama City. The city boasts a preserved canal district that dates back to the Edo Period (1603–1867), when it was a key hub for rice distribution. The name "Kurashiki" roughly means "town of storehouses," a nod to the rice warehouses that once lined the waterways.

Many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been transformed into museums, boutiques, and cafes. The Ohara Museum stands out as the most impressive, housing a vast collection of works by renowned Western artists. The canal area is a ten-minute walk from Kurashiki Station.
