What to know
Perched on a steep hill near the coast, the Katsuren Castle Ruins (勝連城跡, Katsurenjō-ato) offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Only a few stone walls and foundations remain of the original castle, yet the site is recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Katsuren Castle is best known as the 15th-century stronghold of Lord Amawari. Legend has it that Amawari was a sickly child abandoned in the mountains to die, but he survived and grew into a powerful leader who overthrew an oppressive lord and seized Katsuren Castle. His later attempt to attack Shuri Castle ended in defeat and his death.
The ruins lie in central Okinawa Honto on the Yokatsu Peninsula, which juts eastward from the island, about 25 kilometers northeast of Naha.
From Naha Bus Terminal, take bus number 52 to Katsurenjōato-mae (勝連城跡前, 100-120 minutes, 1420 yen, roughly hourly). The castle ruins are a five-minute walk from the stop. Alternatively, bus number 27 goes to Nishihara bus stop (西原, 1420 yen, about hourly), which is a ten-minute walk from the ruins.
By car, it takes about one hour from Naha via the expressway between Naha and Okinawa Minami IC (420 yen one way).
