Okuhida Hot Springs

Visitor guide for the Okuhida Hot Springs.

What to know

Okuhida is renowned for its hot springs, especially the rotemburo (outdoor baths) that offer stunning views of the surrounding Northern Japan Alps. Five onsen towns have developed along Okuhida's valleys, each with its own distinct character and mineral-rich waters sourced from different springs.

The towns feature a range of baths, many offering both segregated and mixed-gender bathing. The best way to enjoy them is by staying overnight at a ryokan with hot spring baths. Public bathhouses and several ryokan also welcome day visitors, typically charging between 500 and 2000 yen. Below is an introduction to each town and a selection of recommended public baths.

Hirayu is the oldest and largest onsen town in Okuhida, reportedly discovered in the 1560s by Takeda Shingen's troops crossing the region. Today, it boasts many ryokan, from small family-run inns to large complexes. Its waters are said to relieve neuralgia, cold sensitivity, and skin conditions. Hirayu also serves as the area's transportation hub.

Shin-Hirayu Onsen is the second largest onsen town, located on the eastern bank of the Takahara River opposite Fukuji Onsen, at the base of Mount Yakedake.

Shin-Hotaka Onsen lies deep in the valley at the foot of the Hotaka Mountains, home to Japan's third highest peak. Many baths here offer excellent views of the Northern Alps.

Fukuji Onsen (also spelled Fukuchi Onsen) was established about 40 years ago, making it relatively new. Yet it features some of the most atmospheric, traditionally styled ryokan in Okuhida. Although they appear old, most are built from reclaimed materials from old farmhouses, giving them a rustic feel. Some ryokan open their baths to day-trippers, and a small morning market is held in town.
