What to know
Onomichi (尾道) is a charming town on the Seto Inland Sea in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. It stretches from the mainland onto nearby islands connected by the Shimanami Kaido bridges. Small ferries run between downtown and the islands, enhancing the nostalgic port atmosphere.
Onomichi is known for its many slopes, with the town spreading up and around them. Many attractions are along these slopes, requiring visitors to climb narrow lanes through residential areas. The famous Temple Walk, for instance, winds up and down past 25 temples.
Despite its small size, Onomichi has a rich literary and cinematic heritage. Notable authors and directors were born here, and the town has been a filming location for many movies and TV dramas. Several museums along or near the Temple Walk celebrate this history.
One of Onomichi's most unique attractions is the Shimanami Kaido. This route crosses bridges and islands of the Seto Inland Sea, offering the only land connection between Honshu and Shikoku that is accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. Highlights include the Hirayama Museum and the distinctive Kosanji Temple.
