What to know
Onomichi boasts far more temples than a town of its size would typically have. This abundance has become a major draw, and the designated Temple Walk connects 25 of them.
The Temple Walk stretches about two and a half kilometers, taking anywhere from an hour to half a day depending on how long you linger at each temple. You could easily spend a full day if you also explore other attractions along the way.
Onomichi's temples are charming, even if none are breathtaking. Most are small, though a few have multiple buildings and some even feature pagodas. The route is well-marked, but note that many temples require a short detour.
Beyond the temples, the walk winds through narrow residential lanes, past small shops, houses, and schools. It also climbs some of Onomichi's slopes, offering lovely views of the town below and the neighboring island.
Along the route, you'll encounter sights tied to Onomichi's artistic heritage, including former homes of two famous authors and a 'literature path' marked by stones inscribed with poems. The Motion Picture Museum is also a short detour away.
One temple lends its name to Senkoji Park, a large public park atop a hill. You can hike up or take a ropeway. The park also houses the Onomichi City Art Museum, designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, featuring rotating exhibitions on diverse themes and periods.
