What to know
The Tenjin Festival (Tenjin Matsuri) in Osaka is one of Japan's three greatest festivals, alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri. Dating back to the 10th century, it is held annually on July 24 and 25. The main events occur on the second day, July 25, featuring a land procession and a river procession capped with fireworks.
Tenjin Matsuri is the festival of Tenmangu Shrine, honoring its patron deity Sugawara Michizane, the god of scholarship. The festival begins by ceremonially inviting the deity out of the shrine and parading him through the city with lively festivities, before returning him to the shrine. For locals, it's a wonderful summer celebration filled with traditional costumes, spectacular processions, and a festive atmosphere.
On the morning of July 24, the festival kicks off with a ritual at Tenmangu Shrine, followed by prayers at the river for peace and the prosperity of Osaka. In the afternoon, men in tall red hats beat drums to announce that preparations are complete.
The highlights begin at 3:30 PM on July 25, when the red-hatted drummers lead the land procession from Tenmangu Shrine through Osaka's streets. The long parade features costumed characters, including Sarutahiko (a long-nosed goblin on horseback), a ceremonial float with festival music, lion dancers, and umbrella dancers.
About an hour into the procession, the mikoshi (ornate portable shrine) carrying the spirit of Sugawara Michizane leaves the shrine, preceded by a boy and a girl leading a sacred ox, Michizane's messenger. Two more portable shrines join later, but look for the one with a gilded phoenix on top—that's the one carrying the deified spirit.
After the procession reaches the Okawa River around 6:00 PM, participants and portable shrines are loaded onto boats for a river parade. Alongside the procession boats, there are 'stage boats' featuring traditional noh and bunraku performances for onlookers on the shore. Darting between them, Dondoko boats are agilely rowed by young men. Countless festival food stalls along the river add to the joyful mood.
