Earth Celebration

About the Earth Celebration taiko festival on Sado Island.

What to know

The 2026 Earth Celebration is scheduled for August 21-23.

The Earth Celebration is an annual music festival organized by the world-renowned Kodo taiko group, based on Sado Island. Each year, guest artists join Kodo for unique collaborative performances. This three-day event takes place in and around Ogi Town in mid to late August, drawing thousands of visitors from across Japan and around the globe to enjoy its many offerings.

The main attraction is a series of three outdoor evening concerts at the Harbour Market in Ogi Harbor. During the day, the market buzzes with dozens of small shops and food stalls, and various fringe events are also held there.

The festival also features workshops, including taiko drumming and traditional dance sessions. Most require advance registration and a participation fee, and many are conducted in both Japanese and English. Spaces fill quickly, so early booking is recommended.

From Ryotsu Port, Ogi Town is about a one-hour drive by car.

By bus, take the Main Line from Ryotsu to Sawata (40 minutes, 620 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), then transfer to the Ogi Line for Ogi (60 minutes, 840 yen, every 1-2 hours). Alternatively, take the Minami Line (55 minutes, 680 yen, every 1-2 hours) and then the Ogi Line (50 minutes, 840 yen) via the Sado History Museum. Additional buses run during the Earth Festival.
