What to know
Hiyoriyama Park (日和山公園, Hiyoriyama Kōen) sits atop a hill in central Ishinomaki City, 56 meters above sea level on the former grounds of Ishinomaki Castle. The park offers sweeping views of the city, the Kitakami River Estuary, and the waterfront districts along the Pacific coast. On clear days, you can even see as far as Matsushima and Mount Zao. It is also one of Ishinomaki's best cherry blossom spots, with over 400 cherry trees lining the slopes, typically blooming from mid to late April.
At the park entrance stands Kashima Shrine, where merchants once prayed for safe voyages. A network of walking paths leads to viewpoints, green spaces, and two long stairways descending to the lower city districts. The famous poet Matsuo Basho once visited the park, and several monuments dedicated to him are scattered around the grounds.
After the 2011 earthquake, Hiyoriyama Park served as a refuge from the tsunami. The waters rose nearly halfway up the hillside, devastating the waterfront districts below and heavily damaging the riverfront on the opposite side. Today, the park offers views of the affected areas, allowing visitors to appreciate the scale of the destruction and witness the progress of recovery efforts.
The park is about a 20-35 minute walk or a short taxi ride (around 1,400 yen) from Ishinomaki Station.
