What to know
The Ishinomori Manga Museum (Ishinomori Mangakan, also called Ishinomori Mangattan Museum) is an art museum in Ishinomaki City dedicated to manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori. Born in 1938, Ishinomori was a prolific creator of influential manga series such as Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. His work pioneered the superhero and transforming ranger genres, and new adaptations of his series continue to be produced for TV and film today. He once lived in Ishinomaki.
The museum displays a collection of comics, statues, and artworks from his many manga series. Some of his creations are also featured on the streets of Ishinomaki City, including several statues of characters from his manga. His artworks also decorate some trains in the Ishinomaki area and buildings of "Manga Island," a camping resort on nearby Tashiro Island.
The Manga Museum's modern, egg-shaped building sits on an island at the mouth of the Kyukitakamigawa River, where it was directly in the path of the 2011 tsunami. Much of the museum's collection was destroyed in the disaster, but the sturdy building itself survived largely intact. After extensive restoration, the museum fully reopened in 2013.
From Ishinomaki Station, the museum is about a 10-15 minute walk or a short taxi ride (about 900 yen).
