What to know
Miyako City boasts a thriving fishing industry that harvests a wide variety of seafood from the waters along the Sanriku Coast. The Miyako Fish Market (宮古市魚菜市場, Miyako-shi Gyosai Ichiba) is one of the city's public markets. Because it is located inland, it escaped direct damage from the 2011 tsunami.
The market is packed with rows of vendors selling all kinds of fish, seafood, vegetables, and fruits. Much of the seafood is freshly brought in from Miyako Port, including local specialties such as salmon, crab, abalone, sea urchin, and seaweed, all at very reasonable prices. In addition to the larger stalls, one section is reserved for local farm families to sell their produce directly to visitors.
The Miyako Fish Market is about a ten-minute walk north of Miyako Station.
