Clock Tower (Tokeidai)

Visitor guide for the Clock Tower (Tokeidai), the symbol of Sapporo.

What to know

The Clock Tower (Tokeidai) is one of Sapporo's most iconic landmarks. Built in 1878 as a drill hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College, it reflects the city's early development. A clock purchased from Boston was installed in 1881.

Today, the Clock Tower operates as a museum. The first floor features exhibits on the building's history and Sapporo's past, while the second floor showcases the clock mechanism and a spacious ceremony hall reminiscent of colonial American Midwest architecture.

Located just a ten-minute walk south of JR Sapporo Station (four blocks) and one block north of Odori Park, the Clock Tower is easily accessible for visitors.
