What to know
The Shimokita Peninsula (Shimokita HantÅ) is an axe-shaped landmass at the northern tip of Japan's main island, Honshu. Its top attraction is Osorezan, or "Fear Mountain," a barren, steaming landscape rich in sulfur that evokes images of Buddhist hell.
The peninsula is known for its rugged scenery, wild landscapes, and harsh weather. While these features draw visitors, they also lead to widespread closures during winter.
