Cape Oma (Omasaki)

Visitor guide for Cape Oma (Omasaki), the northernmost cape on Japan's main island, Honshu.

What to know

Cape Oma (大間崎, Ōmasaki) marks the northernmost tip of the Shimokita Peninsula and the entire island of Honshu, Japan's main island.

From the cape, you can look across the Tsugaru Strait toward Hokkaido; on clear days, the city of Hakodate is visible in the distance. The lookout area is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops selling local seafood. An observatory building offers panoramic views over the strait.

Beyond its geographic fame, Oma is renowned for its tuna fishing. Oma tuna is considered among the best and most expensive in Japan, with most of the catch heading to Tokyo's Toyosu Market and sushi restaurants nationwide.

Buses run from Mutsu Bus Terminal to Cape Oma every 1–3 hours. The journey takes about 90 minutes and costs 1,900 yen. Most buses also serve Shimokita Station; from there, the one-way trip to the cape takes around 105 minutes and costs 2,030 yen. Get off at the Ōmasaki (大間崎) bus stop.
