Shirakawago Winter Light-Up

Visitor guide for the winter illumination event in Shirakawago.

What to know

The steep roofs and massive structure of Shirakawago's farmhouses are designed to withstand the heavy snowfall the region receives every winter. During peak season, Ogimachi Village is often buried under one to two meters of snow.

While the snow creates challenges for locals, it transforms Shirakawago into a picturesque winter wonderland. To enhance the experience, the village hosts special illumination events on selected Sunday evenings in January and February, drawing many visitors. During the light-up, many of the village's gassho-zukuri farmhouses are lit from 17:30 to 19:30.

In 2026, Ogimachi was illuminated on the following dates:

As visitor numbers have grown significantly in recent years, access to the village during the light-up is now limited to prevent overcrowding and traffic jams, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience. All visitors must obtain an advance reservation and ticket. Below are the three ways to visit:

Note that visiting by regular bus is not possible, as the last buses depart Shirakawago before the light-up begins. Also, visiting by taxi requires reserving a parking lot (see "Visit by car" above).

Just like during the day, Shiroyama Viewpoint offers one of the best views of the village. However, due to limited space, access during the light-up is only possible with a timed admission ticket, which cannot be chosen. These tickets are available only to those staying overnight at a village lodging or joining select bus tours. The viewpoint is accessed on foot from the village; a bus is available for visitors with mobility issues but must be reserved in advance.
