What to know
Suganuma (菅沼), one of Gokayama's top sights, consists of two parts: Suganuma Village and Gokayama Gassho no Sato. Both areas are easy and pleasant to explore on foot, linked by a tunnel that also connects to a hilltop parking lot via an elevator.
In 1995, Suganuma Village and nine of its gassho-zukuri farmhouses were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Ainokura and Ogimachi. These beautifully preserved farmhouses are a delight to see; some now serve as restaurants, minshuku, or museums showcasing daily life and local industries like washi paper and saltpeter production that once sustained the region.
At the other end of the tunnel, Gokayama Gassho no Sato features several traditional farmhouses relocated from the surrounding area to save them from demolition. No one lives here now; instead, school groups use them for overnight stays and cultural activities.
Suganuma is a stop on the bus route between Shirakawago and Takaoka (see timetable). The one-way trip from Shirakawago takes 30 minutes and costs 870 yen. From Shin-Takaoka Station, it takes about 80 minutes and costs 1,200 yen.
Alternatively, some buses on the Kanazawa–Shirakawago route stop at "Gokayama Suganuma" (see timetable and fares). However, you can only board buses heading toward Kanazawa and get off buses coming from Kanazawa (toward Ogimachi), not the other way around. Also, these buses do not serve Suganuma from December to March.
From Ogimachi, Suganuma is about 30 minutes away via National Route 156. You can save a few minutes by taking the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway between Shirakawago and Gokayama IC (regular toll 580 yen). From Gokayama IC, it's about two minutes to Suganuma.
