Naoshima Island

Travel guide for Naoshima, an island known for contemporary art, located in the Seto Inland Sea in Japan.

What to know

Naoshima (直島) is an island in the Seto Inland Sea famed for its contemporary art scene and as a key venue for the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Part of Kagawa Prefecture, the island offers a Mediterranean vibe with sandy beaches, sunny weather, and a laid-back rural charm, making it a relaxing escape from Japan's bustling cities.

Most of Naoshima's art is managed by the Benesse Corporation, which runs museums and installations on Naoshima and nearby Teshima and Inujima islands. Many of Benesse's museums, including the Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, Naoshima New Museum of Art, and Benesse House, were designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando.

Additionally, Naoshima's municipal buildings and schools were designed by modernist architect Kazuhiro Ishii.
