Ogijima Island

Travel guide for Ogijima Island, a small island off the coast of Takamatsu.

What to know

Ogijima (男木島), the smaller sibling of nearby Megijima, sits in the Seto Inland Sea. A leisurely 40-minute ferry ride from Takamatsu brings you to this island of about 150 residents, stretching just two kilometers long and one kilometer wide.

Ogijima is essentially a cluster of mountains rising from the sea, with a single village and ferry terminal at the southern end and a lighthouse at the northern tip, separated by a forested interior. A pleasant narrow road winds through fields and forest, allowing visitors to walk from the ferry terminal to the lighthouse and its small museum in about 30 minutes.

The island's only village clings to the mountain slope above the harbor. Wander through its charming network of narrow lanes connecting wooden houses. Halfway up the mountain, overlooking the village, stands Toyotamahime Shrine, where locals pray for safe childbirth.

Ogijima is a venue for the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Outside festival periods, around a dozen permanent artworks from past editions remain on display, ranging from indoor pieces to outdoor installations and projects that repurpose entire homes. Note that many artworks are closed on weekdays and during winter.

Ferries run every two hours between Takamatsu Port, Megijima, and Ogijima. The one-way trip from Takamatsu to Ogijima takes 40 minutes and costs 510 yen.

Ogijima is compact and easily explored on foot. The lighthouse on the far side of the island is a 30-minute walk from the ferry terminal.
