Sanuki Udon

Basic introduction to Sanuki Udon, one of Japan's three most famous udon varieties, originating from Kagawa Prefecture. Known for its firm, chewy texture, it's a must-try when visiting Takamatsu.

What to know

Sanuki Udon (讃岐うどん) is a type of thick noodle from Kagawa Prefecture, named after its historical name, Sanuki. Along with Mizusawa Udon from Gunma and Inaniwa Udon from Akita, it ranks among Japan's three most celebrated udon varieties. However, Sanuki Udon is the most widely known and has gained nationwide popularity.

What sets Sanuki Udon apart is its firm, chewy texture, achieved by using a specific type of wheat traditionally grown in Kagawa. Today, most of the wheat used for Sanuki Udon is imported from Australia.

Like other udon noodles, Sanuki Udon can be enjoyed in various ways: cold with a dipping sauce or hot in a flavorful broth with toppings. It is considered an affordable, quick, and healthy meal, with basic dishes costing just a few hundred yen.

Udon remains extremely popular in Kagawa Prefecture, which proudly calls itself the "udon prefecture." With over 700 Sanuki Udon restaurants across the prefecture, many can be found in the shopping and dining districts of Takamatsu.
