What to know
Shikoku Mura (四国村, meaning "Shikoku Village") is an open-air museum nestled at the foot of Mount Yashima. This pleasant hillside park preserves and displays traditional buildings and structures relocated here from across Shikoku Island.
Among the exhibited buildings, mostly from the Edo and Meiji periods, are farmhouses, storehouses, and various traditional workshops that once produced goods like sugar and soy sauce.
Other structures include bridges, a lighthouse, and a kabuki theater with open-air seating that occasionally hosts performances. A highlight is the vine suspension bridge, made of vines and wood (reinforced with steel cables), similar to those in the Iya Valley in neighboring Tokushima Prefecture.
Shikoku Mura also features a small art gallery showcasing paintings and sculptures by modern artists from around the world. The gallery offers a nice view over the city and occasionally hosts live performances and special events.
Shikoku Mura is located at the base of Yashima and can be reached from Takamatsu Station via either Kotoden or JR trains:
Take a train from Takamatsu-Chikko Station to Kawaramachi Station (5 minutes, frequent departures), then transfer to the Shido Line. Get off at Kotoden Yashima Station (15 minutes, 3 trains per hour). The entire trip takes about 30 minutes and costs 360 yen. From the station, it is a five-minute walk to Shikoku Mura.
