What to know
Furukawa (古川) is a small mountain town in Gifu Prefecture and the heart of the rural municipality of Hida City. It lies just 15 minutes by train north of Takayama. To avoid confusion with other towns of the same name in Japan, it is often called Hida-Furukawa.
Furukawa is quieter and less crowded than Takayama. Like its neighbor, it prospered from the region's high-quality timber and the exceptional skill of local carpenters. The town boasts a well-preserved historic district and a famous festival. The Furukawa Festival, held one week after the Takayama Spring Festival, features massive drums, near-naked men, and tall, beautifully decorated floats.
