What to know
Takayama (高山) is a city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. To distinguish it from other places named Takayama, it is often called Hida-Takayama. The city retains a traditional charm like few others in Japan, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. It is a top choice for travelers wanting to add a rural element to their itineraries.
During the feudal era, Takayama gained importance as a source of high-quality timber and highly skilled carpenters. Because of these valuable resources, the city was placed under direct control of the shogun and prospered despite its remote mountain location. The Takayama Festival, held in spring and autumn, is considered one of Japan's finest festivals.
