What to know
The Higashiyama Walking Course (東山遊歩道, Higashiyama Yūhodō) is a pleasant walking route through Takayama's temple town (Teramachi), the city's rural outskirts, and Shiroyama Park, a wooded hill that once housed Takayama Castle.
Stretching 3.5 kilometers, the trail takes you past over a dozen temples and shrines, the ruins of Takayama's former castle, and everyday scenes of a rural Japanese town. While not a major sightseeing attraction, it offers a relaxing way to spend one or two hours exploring Takayama's quieter side.
The course starts and ends near the Museum of History and Art, about a 15-minute walk from Takayama Station.
