Old Town

Visitor guide for the old town of Takayama, which retains a nostalgic Edo Period flavor.

What to know

Takayama's old town is remarkably well preserved, with many buildings and entire streets dating back to the feudal era when the city flourished as a prosperous merchant center.

The southern part of the old town, especially Sannomachi Street, is particularly charming, lined with historic homes, shops, cafes, and sake breweries, some of which have been operating for centuries. These shops are typically open daily from 9:00 to 17:00.

Several old town homes are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the former living quarters of local merchants and displaying traditional household items and local crafts.

A fun alternative to walking is a rickshaw ride through the streets. A 30-minute tour for two costs around 7,000 yen, with shorter and longer options available.

Takayama's old town is a ten-minute walk from Takayama Station.
