Takeo Onsen

A hot spring town with silky waters and a storied past

What to know

Takeo Onsen (武雄温泉) is a hot spring town in western Saga Prefecture with a history spanning over 1,300 years. Its waters are renowned for a silky, smooth feel on the skin, thanks to a high concentration of sodium bicarbonate. Over the centuries, the springs have drawn feudal lords, craftsmen, and soldiers stationed at nearby Nagoya Castle in Karatsu during the late Azuchi-Momoyama Period in the 16th century.

Today, visitors and locals alike can soak in Takeo Onsen's waters at several public bathhouses near the town's iconic Sakura-mon, a two-story red-lacquered gate. The main bath, Motoyu, offers two simple pools (hot and very hot) separated by gender, while Horaiyu provides an even simpler single pool for each gender. The third bath, Saginoyu, features more amenities including a sauna and outdoor baths. Private baths are also available with advance reservation.

Behind the Sakura-mon Gate stands the Takeo Onsen Shinkan, built in 1915 by the same architect who designed Tokyo Station's famous Marunouchi Station Building. Originally the town's public bathhouse, it now serves as a free museum showcasing its tiled Roman baths and tatami-covered rest areas, no longer in use.

Another highlight is the Takeo City Library, Japan's first to combine traditional library services with a bookstore and coffee shop. Its sleek architecture is bathed in natural light from large windows and a central skylight. A history museum corner displays artifacts related to the onsen town.

Takeo Onsen Station is a transfer point for travelers to Nagasaki between limited express trains and the Nishikyushu Shinkansen. From Fukuoka (Hakata Station), take the "Relay Kamome" limited express to Takeo Onsen (60 minutes, around 3,500 yen one way). The trip is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Kyushu Rail Pass. From Nagasaki, the shinkansen takes 30 minutes and costs about 3,500 yen.

The central onsen district around the red gate and public baths is about one kilometer west of Takeo Onsen Station, while the library is about one kilometer south. Both are a 15-minute walk from the station.
