What to know

Makuhari is a commercial district just outside central Tokyo, located along Tokyo Bay in Chiba Prefecture. Developed in the late 1980s on reclaimed land, it features modern architecture and city planning with elevated walkways and wide, well-designed streets. The area offers a convention center, a baseball stadium, abundant shopping and dining, and a large seaside park.

The main draw is the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex (幕張メッセ), Japan's second-largest convention center after Tokyo Big Sight. Its eleven exhibition halls, conference hall, and 9,000-seat event hall host major trade shows and tech exhibitions like the Tokyo Game Show, CEATEC, and the Tokyo Auto Salon, along with numerous other events, conventions, and concerts.

Elevated pedestrian walkways connect the convention center to nearby hotels, shops, and restaurants. Most shopping and dining cluster around Kaihin-Makuhari Station, where you'll find Plena Makuhari Mall and Mitsui Outlet Park. The outlet mall features many foreign and domestic brand stores selling apparel and accessories. More shopping, including an Aeon mall, lies north of the station.

Makuhari also offers parks and recreation, especially east of the station. Makuhari Seaside Park stretches along the shore and is home to Zozo Marine Stadium, where the Chiba Lotte Marines baseball team plays. Additionally, Tokyo Disney Resort is just a short train ride away near Maihama Station.

The area centers on JR Kaihin-Makuhari Station. Note that Makuhari Station and Makuhari-Hongo Station, though in the same general area, are not close to Kaihin-Makuhari Station and require a 15–20 minute bus ride.

Tokyo Station and Kaihin-Makuhari Station are connected by the JR Keiyo Line. The one-way trip costs 620 yen and takes about 30 minutes by rapid train or a few minutes longer by local train, with frequent departures. Alternatively, limited express trains run between Tokyo and Kaihin-Makuhari, costing 1,380 yen one way (1,640 yen without prior seat reservation); they are slightly faster and usually less crowded.
