What to know
Tottori City (鳥取), the capital of Tottori Prefecture, lies on the Sea of Japan coast in western Japan. It is best known for its vast sand dunes, the largest in the country, spanning over 30 square kilometers north of the city center.
Since the feudal era, Tottori has served as the region's political hub. The remains of its former castle still stand at the northeastern edge of the city, while several museums and Kannon-in Temple can be found in central Tottori.
