What to know
Kannon-in (観音院) is a Tendai Buddhist temple built on the eastern side of Tottori City during the Edo Period (1603–1868) under the patronage of the ruling Ikeda family.
The temple is famous for its landscape garden, featuring a large pond surrounded by lawns and tall maple and pine trees. The pond contains small islands shaped like a crane and a turtle—traditional symbols of longevity and health often seen in Japanese gardens. Visitors can enjoy matcha tea and sweets while admiring the garden from the temple building.
To get there, take the red line of the 100 Yen Kururi Bus from Tottori Station and get off at stop number 14 (15 minutes, 100 yen, every 20 minutes). From the bus stop, it's a 3–5 minute walk to the temple. Alternatively, it's a 30-minute walk from the station.
