What to know
Ikedaya Yasubei Shoten (池田屋安兵衛商店) is a historic medicine shop in downtown Toyama City specializing in traditional remedies. Founded in 1936, it sells the kinds of medicines that made Toyama a renowned pharmaceutical center during the Edo Period. In its old-fashioned setting, visitors can get advice from staff and purchase herbal treatments for various ailments.
At the center of the shop stands an antique pill-making machine. Staff demonstrate the traditional method of crafting pills, and visitors are invited to try it themselves. Upstairs, a restaurant serves health-conscious meals prepared with the same medicinal herbs used in the shop's products.
To get there, take tram line 1, 2, or 4 from Toyama Station to Nishicho (9 minutes, 210 yen one way), then walk a short distance. The Toyama Glass Museum is just 200 meters away.
