Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Travel guide for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a scenic route through the Northern Japanese Alps using several means of transportation.

What to know

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート) is a spectacular journey through the Northern Japan Alps, using a variety of transport modes including cable cars, electric buses, and a ropeway. Completed in 1971, the route connects Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture with Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture. The section between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa is closed to private vehicles.

The route is open from April 15 to November 30 and is inaccessible during winter.

The main draw of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the stunning scenery of the Tateyama Mountain Range, part of Chubu Sangaku National Park. Visitors can enjoy different views depending on the season. In spring, accumulated snow around Midagahara and Murodo forms a majestic snow corridor with walls up to 20 meters high. A section near Murodo is open to pedestrians from April 15 to June 25.

Summer and autumn attract visitors with beautiful landscapes, alpine flowers (especially June to August), and autumn leaves. Fall colors peak around Murodo and Daikanbo from late September to early October, then descend to lower elevations by late October to early November.

The highest point, Murodo, offers hiking trails for both serious hikers and casual walkers. Other highlights include the single-span Tateyama Ropeway, providing panoramic bird's-eye views, and the 186-meter-tall Kurobe Dam, which is especially spectacular when discharging water from late June to mid-October.

From mid-June to September, temperatures along the Alpine Route are mild and rarely too hot. From April to early May and mid-October to November, temperatures are cool and can be chilly on windy days. One layer is enough for summer, while an extra sweater or jumper is recommended for spring and autumn. Good walking shoes are advised for hiking beyond easy trails near stations. Accommodation, including hotels, mountain huts, and campgrounds, is available along the route, especially around Murodo.
