Tsuwano

Rural town with a charming samurai district

What to know

Tsuwano (津和野) is a town on the western edge of Shimane Prefecture. Surrounded by hills, it has a calm and pleasant atmosphere.

In the town center, old samurai residences with white earthen walls, dark red roof tiles, and wooden lattice windows line the streets, evoking scenes from centuries past. The canal running alongside the main street is filled with lively carp, adding color and vibrancy to the picturesque setting. Tsuwano is also home to Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of the five largest Inari shrines in Japan.
