What to know
Tsuwano is one of several towns in Japan nicknamed 'Little Kyoto'. The comparison stems from its old town, which boasts several preserved historic buildings and retains an atmosphere reminiscent of centuries past.
The highlight is the Tonomachi district, where a single street block of the former samurai quarter is particularly well preserved, featuring earthen walls, historic structures, and a water canal filled with carp.
The adjacent former merchant district, located between Tsuwano Station and the Tonomachi district, is not as meticulously groomed and preserved as Tonomachi, but it still contains many old-fashioned buildings and facades, including sake shops and a few interesting museums.
The old town lies just southeast of Tsuwano Station. The Tonomachi district can be reached from the station in a ten-minute walk.
