Uchiko History Museum

Complete visitor guide for the Uchiko History Museum in Uchiko town, near Matsuyama City, Shikoku, Japan.

What to know

The Uchiko History Museum (内子町歴史民俗資料館, Uchikocho Rekishi Minzoku Shiryōkan), also known as the Museum of Commercial and Domestic Life, sits on the main street just outside the Yokaichi Old Town district. Though compact, the museum is engaging, featuring life-sized automated figures that bring 19th- and 20th-century town life to life.

The exhibits are visually informative, compensating for the lack of English text. Upstairs, elegant tatami rooms with sliding doors and painted screens reveal how stylish merchant family homes once looked.

The Uchiko History Museum is a ten-minute walk from JR Uchiko Station.
