What to know
In the late 19th century, Uchiko became famous for high-quality white wax production. Wealthy local merchants built new homes or expanded existing ones, creating beautiful streets lined with large, stylish houses from the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The Yokaichi district has since been restored to preserve these buildings.
Yokaichi (八日市, Yōkaichi) consists of about 90 buildings along a single street. Two of these are open to the public as museums, the largest and most impressive being the Kamihaga Residence.
Uchiko's Old Town is about one kilometer or a 15-minute walk from JR Uchiko Station. The preserved section stretches about 600 meters and contains roughly 90 historical houses.
