What to know
Udo Shrine (Udo Jingū) sits on the scenic Nichinan Coast, about 40 kilometers south of Miyazaki City. Dedicated to Yamasachihiko, father of Japan's mythical first emperor, Jimmu, the shrine is famously built into a cave on a cliffside, offering breathtaking ocean views.
Local legends link Emperor Jimmu to this cave, though it's uncertain whether he was born there or visited as an infant. Common to all stories are the breast-shaped rocks on the cave wall, said to have nourished him.
Water dripping from these rocks is believed to aid pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing, making the shrine a popular spot for women hoping to conceive. It is also considered auspicious for couples and newlyweds.
Outside the cave, a terrace overlooks the ocean. Below, a rope-marked target invites visitors to toss small ceramic undama (lucky balls), sold at the shrine for a small fee. Women throw with their right hand, men with their left; landing a ball in the target brings good luck.
The easiest way to reach Udo Shrine is by rental car. Alternatively, take a bus from Miyazaki Station (90 minutes, 1570 yen one way), which also stops at Aoshima. Get off at Udo Jingu bus stop, then walk ten minutes to the shrine entrance.
