What to know
Uji (宇治) is a small city located between Kyoto and Nara, two of Japan's most renowned historical and cultural centers. Its closeness to these former capitals helped Uji develop early as a cultural hub in its own right. During the Heian Period (710-1185), when the Fujiwara clan held political power, landmarks like Byodoin Temple and Ujigami Shrine—Japan's oldest surviving shrine—were built in Uji.
Uji is also celebrated for its green tea. Although Kozanji Temple in Kyoto is thought to be where tea was first cultivated in Japan, Uji's tea gained a reputation for exceptional quality as early as the 1200s.
