What to know
Kinugawa Onsen (鬼怒川温泉) is a lively hot spring resort town set along the Kinugawa River in Tochigi Prefecture. The heart of the town is lined with large ryokan hotels, and visitors can enjoy not only the thermal baths but also attractions like Tobu World Square and Nikko Edomura theme parks.
The town saw heavy development in past decades, with many large ryokan complexes built along the river. Over time, some of these closed, leaving abandoned buildings. In recent years, Kinugawa has worked to revitalize the riverfront by removing derelict structures and adding walking trails, parks, and footbaths.
Kinugawa Onsen lies close to Nikko and is included in the free travel zone of the Nikko Passes. It makes a great overnight base when exploring Nikko, offering a fun and relaxing complement to the area's cultural and natural sights.
