Utsunomiya

Prefectural capital of Tochigi Prefecture

What to know

Utsunomiya (宇都宮) is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture and its largest city. It sits less than an hour north of Tokyo by shinkansen, just southeast of Nikko's famous temples and shrines. Today a bustling commercial hub, the area has a history rooted in mining. Local Oya stone has been quarried for centuries and used as building material.

Utsunomiya is most famous for gyoza—small dumplings filled with meat and vegetables, served pan-fried, deep-fried, or boiled. The city boasts dozens of specialty restaurants offering fillings like pork, kimchi, seafood, and more. Utsunomiya regularly ranks among Japan's top cities for annual household gyoza consumption, a title it often swaps with rivals Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture and Miyazaki City.
